The Basic Food Group – Grilled Hamburgers

Celebrate Summer with some outdoor grilling.  You know you love that outdoor flavor, cooking on your own grill and tending to the fire or gas valve and cooking the burgers JUST the way you like them.

I won’t insult you by posting the recipe for hamburgers, but will reference advice from my college roommate, David Holloway.  David is the food editor for the Press Register in Mobile, Alabama.  He joyfully selects the “Best Hamburger in the State of Alabama” each year. You can read his work HERE or HERE.

David Holloway’s advice is to keep it simple.  Use fresh ground 80/20 beef to keep it juicy.  Season it with Salt and pepper.  Retain the juices. Don’t press the meat down!

He’s the authority and he has sacrificed thousands of hamburgers for the sake of research. I remember his love for food from our college years at Northeast Louisiana University in Monroe, Louisiana.  We did quite a bit of research at the Pitt Grill, but never wrote about it.

Additional Suggestions

Get your young cooks to help.  Monitor them closely.  That grill is HOT!

Throw on a few hotdogs if you have young ‘ens.  They love dogs.  No one in our family likes raw onions, but saute them in a little butter or olive oil and they will add them to whatever you cook.

Our favorite side dish for hamburgers is Sweet Potato Fries.  Simply chop, coat with extra virgin olive oil, salt and season with Cajun seasoning and bake on a well greased cookie sheet at 350 degrees until tender.

You may add a light salad with cilantro and sweet onion vinaigrette dressing, if you please.

Don’t forget the watermelon.  Celebrate Summer!

We hope this inspires you to hit the grill and cook some burgers this summer.  Please leave your comments below and click the Facebook or Twitter button below.
